The Government of the State of Jalisco, Mexican United States, by means of the Secretariat of Economic Promotion and the Jalisco State Council of Science and Technology and Her Majesty the Queen in right of Alberta, as represented by Alberta Advanced Education and Technology (AET) have agreed to collaborate in research and technology development, and the encouragement of research and technology development opportunities in Alberta and Jalisco. This collaboration was documented by the Jalisco and Alberta governments in a memorandum of understanding dated January 29, 2009 (“Alberta-Jalisco MoU”), and extended until January 2014.
This collaboration is intended to improve opportunities for joint projects in research and technology development, as well as commercialization activities between Alberta and Jalisco in the priority areas of E-Health, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)/ Sensors, Nanotechnology and Embedded Systems, and Multimedia. The program leverages a $6 Million investment fund from Alberta and Jalisco over a three year period; $2 million of the fund has been issued in phase 1.
Decisions on project funding will be made based on rankings provided by expert panel reviews and under consideration of the overall desired Alberta-Jalisco relationship and program outcomes. Consideration for Project funding includes the extent to which the proposal is industry driven, has a detailed and justified budget and has adequate leverage. Approved projects will enter into contracts with both TRLabs and COECYTJAL - one contract in each jurisdiction. The contracts in each jurisdiction will reference each other to ensure there is a commitment to the combined project.
